Gilberto Gil is an iconic figure in Brazilian culture. One of the driving forces of the Tropicalia movement of the late 60s, singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil’s potent music reshaped Brazilian music with rock and reggae rhythms and politically charged lyrics set to exquisite melodies. With a natural charisma and magnetic stage presence, Gil remains a unique musical figure today.
Combining his pulsating rhythms and rich melodies with thoughtful lyrics tackling subjects from social inequality to environmental issues and globalization, Gil's voice has inspired millions around the world.
Here he brings a new project that celebrates the Festa Junina (typically termed São João) - a festival that is commemorated throughout the northeast states in Brazil in June and is the most popular event in Bahia next to Carnival. Gil brings the character of the Festival to life through Forró, folk music from the northeast which accompanies the heady celebrations – and inspired by the music of songriter and poet Luiz Gonzaga.
