Intercontinental
Featuring Sibongile Khumalo & Jack DeJohnette
Not a hotel, but an experience of international musical collaboration which, in the words of singer Sibongile Khumalo, felt “as if I was in a musical Rolls Royce ride: it was challenging and yet very satisfying – great people, great music”.
This feeling was enjoyed by the audience as well as Khumalo. Her extraordinary voice combines a background in opera with the traditions of South Africa and was complemented by the talent of the iconic American jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette. The project also included pianist Danilo Perez, bassist Jerome Harris, trumpeter Byron Wallen and saxophonist Jason Yarde.
The production started with a residency co-produced with Aldeburgh Music and embraced workshops in local schools before a concert at Snape Maltings.Intercontinental toured festivals in Europe before triumphantly headlining at the Cape Town Jazz Festival in 2007, with the South African President Thabo Mbeki in the audience, and reassembling for the London Jazz Festival in 2008.
